Firmness? Spring count? Price? These are all important questions. However, without context, the answer will often be misleading. The most important factor (and most often overlooked) in selecting a new bed is: YOU. Your body type determines which mattress will suit you best.
What's good for the goose...
Tall and thin, short and stout, heavyweight boxer or a ballerina, when mattress shopping they will often times all be looking for the same thing. Why? Because they ask the same questions, and get the same answers. But why would the same mattress be expected to work for all of them? Why are there so many choices, when there is only one "right" answer? Context.
What it all means...
Firmness is relative to the body type of the individual. To the boxer, a firmer bed will support his weight while conforming to his body. The surface materials will allow his hips and shoulders to settle into the mattress, while his back is held in alignment. The ballerina however will often find the same bed to lack support, and comfort. Due to her small frame, the bed will not conform to her body. Rather, her body will conform to the bed. She cannot settle into the mattress and as a result all her body weight will be placed on her hips and shoulders, and her back will bow down to the mattress surface. She will wake up with sore joints and a stiff back. A softer bed will give her the same results that the boxer experienced on the firmer mattress.
